PROPOSED MAINTENANCE DREDGING IN POINT COUPEE PARISH
NAME OF APPLICANT: Louisiana Generating, LLC, 112 Telly Street,
New Roads, Louisiana, 70760.
LOCATION: Located at Latitude 30.73083, Longitude -91.35916,
approximately 4 miles north-easterly from the town of New Roads, Louisiana, in
Pointe Coupee Parish. The project is
located within the Terrebonne/Barataria Basin, Hydrologic Unit 08070300.
DESCRIPTION: Department
of the Army (DA) permit, MVN-1997-04517-WPP, was issued to Louisiana
Generating, in 1998 and subsequently extended, to conduct annual maintenance
dredging of between 150,000 – 300,000 cubic yards of silt from the Mississippi
River at the coal unloading dock and water intake facilities of the Big Cajun
II Power Plant. The applicant is
requesting that the DA permit be reissued for the permitted activity, so that
maintenance dredging at the coal docks and water intake facilities may continue
when required. The main purpose of the
permitted activity is to enable coal barges to ingress and egress to the coal
dock unloading facilities and to keep water intake structures used for cooling
water purposes from becoming obstructed from silt. The project does not include
any proposed impacts to wetlands. All
dredged material would be returned to the Mississippi River and pumped beyond
the -55 foot contour.
